Stephen McDaniel focuses his practice on the areas of service contract, warranty, motor vehicle protection product, health care, and insurance industries. As a former Certified Public Accountant, Stephen has the unique ability to understand his client’s business and finances in order to more effectively represent the client’s interests. Stephen assists companies with structuring their business operations to ensure compliance with existing law and securing registrations or licensure where required. This includes helping administrators and providers of service contract and protection product offerings build their programs from the ground up, including formation, contract drafting, and national licensure. Stephen also assists insurance companies with the filing of rates and forms, developing compliance procedures, and interacting with state regulatory agencies across the country in response to various compliance matters with a focus on the industries he represents. Stephen represents his health care clients before the Agency of Health Care Administration and the Department of Health in connection with licensure and certificate of need matters as well as in connection with administrative litigation where necessary.
Stephen also represents clients in connection with national government relations projects. This includes assisting clients with assessing their business goals and determining how state legislation can help them meet such goals. Stephen has had extensive experience with drafting legislation, meeting with state regulators and legislators to negotiate legislation, testifying in front of legislative and regulatory committees, and managing an existing nationwide network of local government relations experts in an effort to enact legislation serving his client’s business interests.
Stephen serves as the Assistant Executive Director and Assistant General Counsel to the Service Contract Industry Council (“SCIC”), a national trade association representing the interests of the service contract industry. Stephen oversees SCIC’s efforts to enact and monitor legislative, regulatory and administrative activity throughout the United States, and lobbies both state and federal legislators and regulators regarding various service contract and related issues.
Stephen received his Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Finance at Florida State University, graduating Cum Laude in 1999 and passing the Uniform Certified Public Accountant exam in Georgia where he received the Gold Key Award for scoring the highest score of the 1,462 candidates. Stephen graduated from the Florida State University College of Law, Summa Cum Laude, in 2004 ranked third in his graduating class, and received the distinction of being selected as a member of the Florida State Chapter of the Order of the Coif.
Prior to law school, Mr. McDaniel worked as a Senior Accountant in KPMG’s Audit Department, where he supervised audit engagement teams in the consumer markets, software development, telecommunications, real estate, and banking and financial institutions industries.
From August 2004 to August 2006, Mr. McDaniel served as a Senior Staff Attorney to Justice R. Fred Lewis of the Florida Supreme Court.
